I know when I was first in Japan I didn’t know any Japanese I had a very difficult time traveling I had to memorize different Kanji and hiragana to travel from Iwakuni to the country side. Luckily there was English lettering on most signs but asking for directions and where the train station was very difficult so sure. I had to conjure my Pictionary skills 😂 (scribble and stick men)

"How Difficult is Travelling Japan without Japanese?" pretty much , almost impossible. japanese hates learning western languages. they make zero efforts to understand us and correcting us if we speak a bad japanse. it's a miracle they still recieve weeaboo visitors who are ready to spend their times at learning the torture of a language japanese is, each year.

This year I spent less than a month in Japan, mainly in Tokyo. Before the trip I was learning basic Japanese, I can read Hiragana decently, I have a basic vocabulary and can handle basic conversation. As I found out, I can ask questions, but if someone answers me, I'm lost 😀 In the end I found out that 99% can be communicated in English, the rest by pointing and nodding my head.

Really helpful information! I am Chinese so I can read all the Kanji Characters in Japanese. One thing I worry about is how to communicate with local people. Now looks like I can speak to them with my broken English. And given my speaking English is at the same level as regular Japanese, I can feel no shame or embarrassed cause they won't find out my grammar or accent problem lol

just spent a month in japan without knowing any japanese. i just looked up like 5 phrases to get me around. went to tokyo, ibaraki, shikuoka, osaka, kyoto, hiroshima, mijayima, shin-aoyama, and hokkaido. in the places where they didnt speak japanese i just google translated the japanese letters to get a rough translation and that was enough for me to get by. Just gotta get over the fear of being shy. Japanese people are tend to be very nice. The only one i saw that was grumpy was this old man in a convenience store inside the train station.

The problem is knowing a phrase book level of a language, you can ask a question but do not know what the answer is. You ask where is some place in Japanese and get an answer that gives you no information to get there.

I first moved to Japan for study abroad and learned roughly a year's worth of Japanese prior to coming (though still a beginner at the time). The moment I arrived in Japan I spoke as much Japanese as I could. I couldn't perfectly understand everything, but I was able to handle most conversations with the Japanese friends I made along the way in Japanese and handled most mundane tasks alone. Watching other foreigners struggle knowing zero Japanese genuinely gives me an ego boost thanks to my previous efforts with learning the language beforehand. Before you go to Japan (or any other country), do yourself a favor. Buy a textbook and learn the language. It makes your experience in Japan a lot more fun.

It was a holiday in Japan, I believe it was Sports Day. We were in Kyoto, heading to the airport in Osaka. Unfortunately, our 2-year-old daughter had an ear infection, and we planned to see a doctor in Sydney, our next destination. She was a bit fussy as I carried her on my back in a backpack carrier. An elderly Japanese man on a bicycle stopped beside us, inquiring about her well-being. Through gestures, we conveyed that she had a fever. He wanted to guide us to a pharmacy, but we explained that we would see a doctor in Sydney. We said our goodbyes and headed to the bus stop. Suddenly, the same old man arrived like a rocket on his bicycle and solemnly handed us cooling pads to stick on her forehead. Surprised by such thoughtfulness and his caring nature, we thanked him profusely. I initially tried to reimburse him, but it became evident that it was entirely unacceptable for him, and my attempt to pay caused him almost physical discomfort. What a wonderful experience and what a great ambassador for Japan.

    Why are you in Sendai?
The beginning and the last scene is in front of Sendai station.

Many people speak English in Tokyo, Kyoto, and other parts of Japan where tourism is thriving, but not in places like Sendai, where I live, where there are few tourist attractions.

And even in Japan, people in the Tohoku region are shy, so you should take that aspect into account.
