I am French living one hour in the north of Saint Tropez, my great father was born in Nice in 1931.
So i know the area very well i was born here in 1974.
There are lots of discussions about where begins the French Riviera.
What is sure is that Cassis and the Calanques are not situated in the French Riviera area but in Provence.
For some people, French Riviera is from the east of Toulon (Hyeres) to Menton, for some others it starts from Esterel to Menton.
Where is the truth in don t know really but for me not before Toulon.
What is your opinion ?
Nice and Menton were given to France by Italy (Turin treaty) to thank Napoleon III for having protected Italy from threatening Austrian invasions in times of political difficulties in Italy.. Napoleon III won the Solferino battle in northern Italy against the Austrians.

Hey thanks for this – would you recommend having a rental car to explore the coast or is parking difficult and expensive?
Out of all these places in the French Riviera, I visited Monaco, Nice, and the Calanques in Cassis this past spring. Definitely enjoyed Nice and it was nice to see the other 2 places. 🙂
