As a girl who hates high heals I have to say, if a woman is wearing high heals to the airport/plane just know its because they want to wear high heals, period.😀 High heals wearers knows what they can handle or not, generally speaking.

Great tips. I esp like the patience reminder. I]d place KINDNESS right up there w/ patience. I have seen alot of kindness. It can affect people for life. I've also seen the opposite which is so unnecessary and uncalled for…

Pro tip: When going through the security checkpoint always put your laptop and electronics in the last bin at security. If you’re delayed, someone could grab them and leave before you’re through.

great video, really insightful tips! I must say, though, I think some of these "worst mistakes" could be a bit subjective. for instance, not packing snacks could just be a personal preference. I mean, some of us actually enjoy trying different airport food! What do u guys think?

For two years, my airline has advertised for international travel how to verify passports prior to arrival. I carefully followed directions. But it has never worked. I have eliminated frustration and stress by just arriving with enough time to checkin and verify the documents. So much for technology.

Why arrive 3-4 hours before the airport open at night?

Well about the gate, depending on the airline, most of the time gate information is available about 30-60 minutes before boarding, especially in Europe, but usually you know the terminal where your flight is expected to board, so usually i make my way to that specific terminal after security and then get food/drinks while waiting for gate information. But usually European airports are relatively walkable and you dont need to walk a lot then take a shuttle then walk a bit more to get to your gate which happens in most major US airports

As for dress: wear something you can move in. You never know if an emergency might happen and you need to get out quickly. Also beware of the fabrics you wear. I saw a show many years ago that discussed surviving a minor crash. One point that was made is that often a flame can shoot through the plane floor, if you are wearing knit, it will melt to your legs etc. wear cotton or some fabric like that.

If you have a connection make sure your watch updates to the local time. I was flying from China to the US with a stop in Korea. Korea was one hour ahead of China so when we landed I realized that the time I had to get to my connection was one hour less than my watch showed. Of course, most cell phones will update automatically but if you are looking at a watch be careful. A Chinese couple that traveling on the same flight from China almost missed their connection because they never thought about the time change. Fortunately I noticed their connection to SFO was in final boarding and I ran back to where the husband was to tell him they were going to miss their flight. I convinced the gate agent to wait for them but it was close!

I had a layover in the Denver Airport of 3 hours coming back to MSP from Oregon. I went to find my gate as soon as I got through security and ensured my flight was listed. I decided to walk around and make some calls. 30 minutes before boarding I went back to the gate and found my flight was moved and now leaving from the opposite side of the airport and had to get to the other terminal. I made it just as they gave my seat to a standby passenger. Since the door was still open they gave me the seat but it was close. I stay right by the gates now.

Shopping- some of the airport’s duty free stuff are actually worth checking out. Ciggs, alcohol and perfume for one.
Organizing your backpack- it’s a great idea to have 1/2 designated travel backpacks, that way you don’t lose composure when you can’t find your wallet/keys/passport etc if for some reason after putting it back “somewhere in the backpack”
Travel light- travel lighter than you allocated weight is always a good idea too to make up for any ad hoc shopping one may do even if it’s unplanned. You “never” know you might see that great deal.

I do the gate checking thing, but then my gate was changed. Fortunately the new gate wasnt too far away but with the language barriar and airport communication systems being what they are it made it a bit hectic.

Have you ever had a check-in gate that was like 12A? Not a regular number. I was travelling around the Philippines and I couldn't find this mythical 12A checkin gate. After walking around for ages I found out it was a door that wasn't clear and that was only opened just before checkin, then down stairs then walk for a bit and then the gate. Fun times.

I always go directly to my gate when I arrive. One time I got to my gate and it said the city that I was going to, it had my flight number, all looked good, but I started checking the flight online and my gate had changed! I went up to one of the boards with all the flights listed and my flight had indeed changed gates. Even though I still had more than an hour before boarding, I jumped up to find my gate, and good thing I did, it was basically 20 minutes away on the other end of the terminal. As I was walking through the airport with my bags, I got a text on my phone saying my gate had changed, finally.

I don't fly often, but this happened on both a domestic & an international flight. Each time involved sexually explicit material by a man sitting next to me. In one case, he was reading pork magazines & in the other he was watching pornographic movies. At least he used earphones. Yes, both men had the right to do so, but it made me (a woman) feel quite uncomfortable. I angled myself the other direction as much as possible. But we all know flying coach doesn't give you much room to do so.

I have always walked straight to my gate. My mistake is I don't attempt to research ahead of my travel for what is located near my gate. I walk past restaurants or places not knowing what else is available. I make it to my gate and realize little is available. I don't like eating at airports either but a 14-hour flight will force me to. If I remember, I will research ahead of my arrival so I have a better idea.
